Part of the Metzger team since its inception 23 years ago, Morna relishes the challenge to constantly generate fresh ideas and she is always looking for opportunities to develop personally. She works with an open and direct style that makes her extremely approachable to clients and candidates. Morna operates in the Business and Support Services sector, with a strong leaning towards soft facilities management services.
Previously in the UK, she worked in advertising. Before that, she lived in Spain working in a property company, which gave her extensive sales experience, and taught her how to deal with lots of rejection!
What is the best part of your role?
I love to build a real connection with my clients, particularly those who have been disappointed with people they’ve recruited, get to know them and what will work for them. Equally, many of my candidates are disenchanted with the large corporate businesses and feel they will be more appreciated in the smaller SME. My role is to achieve a perfect match between the employer and the candidate, for their mutual successes and the growth of the business.
What values do you look for in a candidate?
Much the same as what motivates me – a desire to get under the skin of the culture and values required for a role – also I need to see honesty, a positive attitude and passion along with a desire to succeed. Someone who wants to do a good job and be appreciated!
What would be your best career advice?
Treat life as a journey – never stop learning, enjoy your job and always try to go the extra mile. Sometimes step out of your comfort zone, do something different and see what you find out about yourself. Understand yourself and focus on your strengths.
Can you name one person who has really inspired you and why?
Without a doubt the amazing Nelson Mandela because he suffered for so many years for what he believed in and never gave up. His years in prison and the legacy he has left have made a huge impact both for South Africa and the rest of the world.
Tell me something that no one knows about you?
There are lots of things such as my sky dive in Portugal last year, which I loved and would do again if the opportunity arose, climbing Kilimanjaro, which I successfully made to the Summit, and completing the New York Marathon. However, hardly anyone knows about my days as a croupier dealing on roulette tables in Zimbabwe at the Elephant Hill Country Club!
And finally, what is your burning ambition?
I’ve always wanted to follow the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, which leads to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain. I think it would be an amazing, uplifting and spiritual experience. I would also love to learn to scuba dive.
